Stitched - Suffolk Puff Barnacles Stage 1

Here is the latest textile project for my C&G course! As part of the unit on fabric manipulation I have been asked to make Suffolk puffs (or yoyos), using a number of different fabrics, and then to join them together or attach them to a base fabric. Taking inspiration for the image barnacles and limpets, this is what I came up with.

To be honest, I wasn't looking forward to making Suffolk puffs, I didn't think it was really my cup of tea. But once I found the image of the barnacles on the blue/black slate rock in Cornwall I knew what to do. I used dupioni silk, natural linen, calico, and a couple of different cotton fabrics to make the puffs. The base fabric is a vintage shot indigo cotton kimono fabric, and I really like the way it echoes the rock in the image. I would like to return to this piece later in the course, when we will need to produce 10 resolved samples, and work into it further by adding detail, textural hand stitching and beads!
