Project - Forest Floor & Moss in Embroidery

At the moment I am gathering visual research and information for a potentially long term study project - forest floor and moss interpreted in embroidery. This is very much the initial stage, and my plan is to then move on to drawing (stage 2), followed by a series of stitched samples (stage 3). All going well I will then work towards a finished final piece of embroidery!

Growing up near the Black Forest I have always had a love for this environment, with its rich variety of both flora and fauna, and changeable atmosphere through the seasons. Living in London forests are a little harder to come by, but there are wonderful places such as areas of Richmond Park and Epping Forest - quite enchanted, and perfect for my research purposes!

I have also looked into how other embroidery artists have interpreted this subject, and have come across the inspirational work of Michele Carragher. Below are a couple of images showing her hand embroidered 'Child of the Forest' costumes for Game of Thrones, which she kindly gave me permission to use here. The detail is so beautiful, just staggering! So realistic, and magical at the same time... you can see more of her amazing work on her website.

If over time I will be able to achieve something even half as beautiful and accomplished I will be over the moon - right now I feel really inspired and can't wait to get started!

  1. What a beautiful study / undertaking. I live in Far East Texas I am surrounded by many forests. My home is actually on the edge of the Davey Crocket National Forest with thousands of animals, plants, and trees. I love all types of art especially textile and needle work. I teach young women to quilt at a fabric shop in Shreveport, Louisiana. I look forward to reading about your future work and designs please keep me posted. Pam
